PlatinumLED BIOMAX Review: An Honest Review Of This Panel Series

Last Reviewed on March 1, 2024

In this PlatinumLED BIOMAX review, we’ll cover everything you need to know about the BIOMAX Series. Plus, hear from real customers on why you should (or shouldn’t) get one.

I’m not sure when my skin began to lose its youthful glow. It happened slowly over time – first, with a few acne scars leftover from high school, then the accumulation of sun damage, and, most insidiously, the creeping appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

There’s no magic cure or fountain of youth to reverse the effects of aging, but some natural therapies may help freeze and even roll back some of these effects. Red light therapy is one of the most promising of these solutions.

That being said, there are a lot of red light therapy panels available on the market, all claiming to offer a long list of benefits. While many are legit, some companies are capitalizing on red light therapy’s rising popularity to sell sub-par devices.

In this PlatinumLED BIOMAX review, we’ll analyze and rate the BIOMAX Series, a popular line of LED light therapy panels often talked about by health enthusiasts.

But, if you’re short on time, you can skip right to our final recommendation here.

What is the PlatinumLED BIOMAX Series?

The PlatinumLED BIOMAX Series is a collection of red light therapy panels that incorporate LED lights for therapy purposes. These panels emit specific wavelengths of red and near infrared light that have been shown to provide a long list of health benefits like anti-aging, hair growth, and more!

These light wavelengths work by stimulating adenosine triphosphate (ATP) production in our cells, which is an essential element in cellular function and regeneration [1]. Because we can’t feel this red light on our skin, it’s truly a non-invasive, 100% natural treatment option.

Red light therapy can aid in treating aging skin, slow-healing wounds, muscle recovery, and mood disorders. Doctors have also used it to mitigate side effects from chemotherapy [2].

Let’s look at each of the individual panels in the BIOMAX Series.

The PlatinumLED BIOMAX Devices

PlatinumLED offers four different light panels: the BIOMAX 300, BIOMAX 450, BIOMAX 600, and BIOMAX 900.

PlatinumLED designed the BIOMAX 300 and BIOMAX 400 for targeted application on particular areas of the body. This is very useful for treating facial issues like wrinkles, fine lines, and acne. It’s also ideal for targeting specific body parts to relieve stress and aches.

The BIOMAX 600 and BIOMAX 900, on the other hand, are intended for full-body applications. This feature makes it convenient to apply red light therapy to your entire body without needing to go body-part-by-body-part. However, the two larger panels are heavier and take up more space than the smaller models.

Now, on to the specifics for each BIOMAX panel…

PlatinumLED BIOMAX 300

The BIOMAX 300 is the smallest and most budget-friendly option. With dimensions of 19″ x 9″ x 3″, this panel is best for those looking to use red light therapy for targeted therapy.

Because of its smaller size, the BIOMAX 300 only has 100 3-watt LED lights. However, don’t let its small stature fool you. It boasts an irradiance of 150 mW/cm2 at six inches.

Plus, at just 11 lbs, it’s the easiest panel to transport.

PlatinumLED BIOMAX 450

The BIOMAX 450 is the next largest panel in the series, with dimensions of 19″ x 12″ x 3″.

While it’s the same height as the BIOMAX 300, it’s three inches wider. As a result, it can carry 50% more LED lights than the BIOMAX 300 – it has 150 3-watt LED lights and an irradiance of 160 mW/cm2 at six inches.

The BIOMAX 450 may be best for those looking for both targeted therapy and a wider coverage area than what’s offered by the BIOMAX 300.

PlatinumLED BIOMAX 600

At 36″ x 9″ x 3″, the BIOMAX 600 is best for narrow, full-body treatment. It has 200 3-watt LED lights and an irradiance of 174 mW/cm2 at six inches.

However, with this increase in size and power, you’re giving up the flexibility and mobility of the previous two BIOMAX devices. The BIOMAX 600 weighs 22 lbs and is twice as heavy as the BIOMAX 300.

PlatinumLED BIOMAX 900

The BIOMAX 900 is the largest panel in the BIOMAX Series. As a result, it boasts the most LED lights and the highest irradiance: 300 3-watt LEDs and an irradiance of 185 mW/cm2 at six inches.

However, it weighs 33 pounds, making setup somewhat of a hassle, especially if you’re using the provided door hanging kit. It’s also 36 inches tall, 12 inches wide, and 3 inches deep, so expect to have a dedicated area in your home for this panel.

Given its weight and size, the BIOMAX 900 may be a pain if you live in a smaller apartment and need to move the panel around to make space.

Pros
  • Unique six-wavelength design
  • Makes very little noise
  • Low flicker
  • Features built-in timer
  • Irradiance > 150 mW/cm2
  • 3-year warranty
Cons
  • Pricey
  • Poor customer service (company has a F rating on BBB and 2.7 stars on Trustpilot)
  • Unsatisfactory companion mobile app
  • Questionable business practices

What Comes With Each BIOMAX Red Light Therapy Panel?

Each PlatinumLED BIOMAX red light therapy panel comes with the following:

  • Power Link Cable
  • Panel Linking Hardware
  • Mounting Hardware
  • Door Hanging Kit
  • Eye Protection
  • Two Button (On / Off) Remote Control
  • Therapy Companion App
The light from these red light therapy panels can be extremely bright. While not required, we strongly recommend you wear the provided goggles during your treatment sessions.

PlatinumLED BIOMAX vs. BIO Series

The BIOMAX Series differs from the original BIO Series in a few significant ways.

More Power & Irradiance

The BIO Series offers panels with 300, 450, and 600-watt strengths; the BIOMAX Series adds a 900-watt model for even more power. For example, the BIOMAX 900 boasts an irradiance of 185 mW/cm2 at six inches from the device. The BIO 600 (the strongest panel in the BIO Series) only offers an irradiance of 94 mW/cm2.

Irradiance is a standard industry measure for how powerful a red light therapy panel is. The gold standard for irradiance is 100+ mW/cm2 at six inches from the device.

As a result, PlatinumLED markets the BIOMAX Series as their most powerful devices ever created. However, in our opinion, having an irradiance > 100 mW/cm2 is less of a “wow” factor and more of a feature we’d expect from any red light therapy panel in a similar price range.

More Granular Control Over Your Treatment

Another difference between the BIOMAX and BIO lines is that the BIOMAX Series introduces an integrated digital control and timer system. These features allow you to easily keep track of and control your red light therapy sessions.

Plus, the BIOMAX models are linkable. You’re able to connect multiple panels based on your unique situation. For example, taller individuals may find it helpful to connect two panels on top of each other for a more expansive treatment range.

More Advanced Technology

The BIOMAX Series incorporates PlatinumLED’s patented R+ | NIR+ spectral output, which provides multi-wavelength red and near infrared output. This six-wavelength design is a unique feature not offered by the BIO Series, as the BIO Series only offers two wavelengths: 660 nm (red light) and 850 nm (near infrared light).

More on this multi-wavelength feature in a bit…

Bottom Line: The BIOMAX Series is best for experienced or serious red light therapy users. While the BIO Series was created with red light therapy beginners in mind, the BIOMAX line is a more powerful – and pricey – series intended for users ready to invest in high-output products for increased benefits.

What Makes The BIOMAX Series Stand Out

Let’s take a look at the features of the BIOMAX Series that make it stand out from its competitors.

Patent-Pending R+ | NIR+ Spectral Configuration with Blue Light

PlatinumLED markets its BIOMAX Series as providing advanced spectral output.

Okay, that sounds cool. But, what does it mean?

It’s an overly complicated way of saying their BIOMAX devices use six different wavelengths of light: 480 nm (blue), 630 nm (red), 660 nm (red), 810 nm (near infrared), 830 nm (near infrared), and 850 nm (near infrared).

However, despite producing these six different wavelengths, the BIOMAX Series does not use each one equally. Each BIOMAX device outputs 2% 480 nm, 10% 630 nm, 40% 660 nm, 5% 810 nm, 5% 830 nm, and 38% 850 nm.

(It’s interesting to see a red light therapy panel incorporate blue light.)

Red light therapy offers benefits like anti-aging, hair regrowth, pain relief, and more. Near infrared light therapy provides documented benefits of increased energy metabolism, wound healing, and inhibited cellular toxicity [3]. It also seems to provide some benefits in treating traumatic brain injury because its longer wavelengths can penetrate deeper into the body than red light can [4].

630 nm Wavelength Benefits (Red Light)

The 630 nm wavelength is best for surface-level skin benefits. Whether by itself or in conjunction with other treatments, the 630 nm wavelength has been shown to help with photodamaged facial skin, psoriasis, hair growth, superficial skin cancers, and acne [5, 6, 7, 8].

660 nm Wavelength Benefits (Red Light)

Like the 630 nm wavelength, the 660 nm wavelength can help with surface-level skin issues like acne [9].

However, because the 660 nm wavelength can penetrate a bit deeper into the skin than the 630 nm wavelength can, it can also promote anti-inflammatory, healing, and tissue repair benefits.

For example, one study found that 660 nm light accelerated the proliferation of adipose-derived stem cells (ASCs). ASCs are a widely used tool in regenerative medicine because of their ability to differentiate into something like osteoblasts, giving doctors a way to potentially replace autologous bone grafts [10].

810 nm Wavelength Benefits (Near Infrared Light)

Because near infrared light can penetrate much deeper into the skin and tissue than red light can, the 810 nm wavelength has the potential to be a viable treatment for brain disorders and joint pain.

It’s been shown to help improve 90-day outcomes in stroke patients, treat major depression, minimize long-term neurological deficits from traumatic brain injury, and reduce joint inflammation [11, 12, 13, 14].

Doctors pointing at brain scan results

However, it’s important to note that more studies are needed for the 810 nm wavelength. Most studies around this wavelength have either focused on animals or used the 808 nm wavelength.

While we don’t expect a significant difference between the 808 nm and 810 nm wavelengths, we’d still like to see more researchers using the 810 nm wavelength in clinical trials.

830 nm Wavelength Benefits (Near Infrared Light)

The 830 nm wavelength has been shown to help with injury recovery and wound healing [15, 16].

In a preliminary study on wound healing, researchers found 830 nm wavelength light to effectively accelerate the healing of a variety of wounds and reduce infection. While not statistically significant, this study is interesting because researchers looked at such a wide range of conditions like infected dog bites and herpes simplex [16].

850 nm Wavelength Benefits (Near Infrared Light)

Like the 830 nm wavelength, the 850 nm wavelength has healing benefits. Researchers found that 850 nm light improved recovery time in rats and mice with skin lesions [17].

The 850 nm wavelength has also been shown to help with post-workout recovery and inflammation [18, 19].

Power & Irradiance

Each BIOMAX device meets the industry gold standard of 100+ mW/cm2. PlatinumLED’s smallest panel, the BIOMAX 300, has an irradiance of 160 mW/cm2 at six inches away from the panel.

Why does this matter?

In theory, more potent output means faster and more significant results.

Plus, a higher irradiance allows you to use the panels from a greater distance, giving you the ability to cover a more significant portion of your body. This translates into shorter treatment times because you’ll only need to do two 20-minute sessions (front-and-back), for example, instead of four 20-minute sessions (front-and-upper-body, front-and-lower-body, back-and-upper-body, and back-and-lower-body).

With a weaker output, you might not receive the full benefits of the device when standing at a distance.

As a result, you don’t need to have skin-to-device contact like with many handheld red light therapy devices, which can get time-consuming. You can still reap the full benefits even when standing a reasonable distance from the panel.

However, because the BIOMAX Series uses a 90-degree lens beam angle (more on this later), you’ll experience more “wasted” power the further you stand from it, even with its high irradiance.

Multiple Setup Options

PlatinumLED offers a wide range of mounting systems for your red light therapy setup. They offer a Tabletop Stand, Mobile Rack Stand, Horizontal Rack Stand, and more.

We’ll only cover a couple of these BIOMAX stands in this review, but you can check out their website to learn more about the other options.

Tabletop Stand

The Tabletop Stand is designed to hold the BIOMAX 300 or BIOMAX 450. It can be used on any flat surface like a desk, table, or even the floor.

Because it’s designed for the smaller panels, it’s best for targeted use on specific body parts, like your face or knee. This stand is also fully adjustable, so you can angle the panel as needed.

Mobile Rack Stand

The Mobile Rack Stand is a wheeled rack designed to hold four BIOMAX panels (two wide and two tall) of any size. Its design makes it easy to move and store.

As a result, this stand is intended for full-body application, making it easy to immerse yourself in red light for the duration of your therapy session.

Horizontal Rack Stand

The Horizontal Rack Stand is intended to hold up to two BIOMAX light panels for overhead application. This design is perfect for those wanting to receive full-body red light therapy while lying down. Its adjustable height makes it easy to conform to your space and specific needs.

However, because the base is 26 inches by 30 inches and the adjustable height is 40 inches to 58 inches, you won’t get as broad of a treatment coverage area as with the Mobile Rack Stand.

Before purchasing any of these stands, make sure you’re happy with your red light therapy panel because PlatinumLED does not offer any refunds on these.

Modular Construction

Another convenient feature of the PlatinumLED BIOMAX Series is that the panels can be linked together to create the perfect setup based on your unique situation. This feature makes it possible to customize your panel system to fit your space and irradiance needs.

If you live in a small apartment, you may want to link a couple of small panels to provide greater coverage. If you have plenty of space in your home, linking some of the larger panels can create a wide swath of irradiance for basking.

Timer System & Digital Control Panel

One significant upgrade of the BIOMAX Series over the original BIO Series is its digital control panel and timer.

Anyone who has used light therapy knows how easy it is to lose track of time while undergoing treatment. This built-in timer is perfect for those who don’t want to check their phone every few minutes to keep track of their session length.

The digital control panel also makes it easy to adjust the panel’s settings, giving you full control to set up the exact red light therapy experience you desire.

Mobile App

PlatinumLED offers a mobile app for Android and iOS – this is a unique offering that other red light therapy companies don’t provide. PlatinumLED markets the app as providing dosage, distance, and timing information for your red light therapy sessions.

However, like us, most users are not impressed.

At the time of this article’s writing, the app garners a dismal 2.4/5 stars in the Apple App Store and 2.5/5 stars in the Google Play Store. Several users complain that the app consistently crashes every time they try to use it. Others refer to the app’s functions as useless, saying the dosage information is vague and the app offers no information that is not already included in the user’s manual.

PlatinumLED app gets a 2.4 star rating in the Apple App Store

PlatinumLED app gets a 2.5 star rating in the Google Play Store

While the mobile app is marketed as a bonus feature, we’re often of the belief that if you’re going to do something, you should do it right (or at least to the best of your abilities) – especially when you’re selling products that cost upwards of $1,000.

The many issues app users have faced may indicate a poorly thought out product that was pushed through as a marketing effort rather than as a way to improve the user experience and educate their customers.

2023 Update

It seems like PlatinumLED has removed and re-released their mobile app in the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store.

While there still seems to be a couple glitches, the app does seem to be functioning much better than its previous version.

(They’ve essentially “deleted” all the bad reviews by making a new app. But, hey, at least the app seems to work now!)

Warranty & “60 Day Trial”

All BIOMAX red light therapy panels come with a 3-year warranty and a 60-day satisfaction guarantee. These policies might seem great at first – after all, you get to try these products without considerable risk! – but we recommend reading their fine print before purchasing a panel.

If you decide the BIOMAX Series isn’t for you and want a refund, be prepared to lose some of your hard-earned money on return shipping costs and their hidden restocking fees. Paying to ship a 33-pound device will not be cheap, and their 20% restocking fee means you only get 80% of your refund back.

So much for a full refund, huh?

Plus, their money-back guarantee only applies to their red light therapy panels, not any of their stands or accessories.

Does The PlatinumLED BIOMAX Series Pass Our Internal Checklist?

No, the PlatinumLED BIOMAX Series does not pass our internal checklist.

While these devices are well-built and easy to use, there are enough negative reviews mentioning poor customer support (plus a F rating on Better Business Bureau!) that prevent us from fully recommending the BIOMAX Series.

We’ll share some screenshots with you in the next section.

Additionally, we’re not a fan of their 20% restocking fee. This might not be a deal-breaker for everyone, but we thought it was worth mentioning. After all, this “hidden fee” is only mentioned in their Return Policy, and I know I’d be shocked if I decided to return a $1,149.00 panel, only to be told I’d get $919.20 back (minus return shipping costs).

Talk about risk, right?

What Others Say About The BIOMAX Series

We scoured the internet and found user reviews that seem somewhat mixed. Generally, customers found BIOMAX products effective, but many were very disappointed in the customer service experience and the mobile app.

While potentially biased, the PlatinumLED BIOMAX testimonials page is packed with reviews from customers who found the BIOMAX products effective. They rave about the BIOMAX devices’ handling of tight muscles, surgery recovery, post-workout aches, chronic pain, and pulled ligaments.

On the other hand, multiple customers have lodged complaints with the Better Business Bureau (BBB) about their experience with PlatinumLED’s customer service. Many report delayed or non-existent responses to damaged equipment, shipping issues, and other problems regarding PlatinumLED products.

In some cases, PlatinumLED customer service has even blocked customers’ phone numbers!

Review From Better Business Bureau

While we understand some customers may be difficult to work with, your customer service reps should never respond to a potential issue by insulting or blocking your customers! We recommend reading some of these reviews for yourself here, as we were pretty shocked at some of their responses.

So, while the PlatinumLED BIOMAX panels may be powerful and effective, their customer service leave something to be desired.

With all that’s been said and done, I know I’d feel hesitant about shelling out $1,000+ on a BIOMAX panel.

An Alternative: BIOMAX Series vs. MitoPRO Series

With PlatinumLED’s customer service issues and sub-par companion app, you might want to consider another option if you’re in the market for red light therapy panels.

Mito Red Light’s MitoPRO Series offers all the same core features as PlatinumLED’s BIOMAX Series at a more affordable price. It also boasts a much better customer service track record.

MitoPRO offers 300, 750, and 1500-watt panels that, like BIOMAX, are linkable, so you’re able to customize your setup to fit your space and needs. MitoPRO panels combine red and NIR light for maximum benefits and are designed to be hung on the back of a door or their Mito Red Light Mobile Stand. MitoPRO devices also feature a built-in timer.

Value Comparison: PlatinumLED BIOMAX vs. Mito Red Light MitoPRO

900w$1,259.00$1.401500w$1,149.00$0.77

As you can see in the above table, MitoPRO offers the same or higher wattage for a lower price across the board.

Patent-Pending Multi-Wavelength Design

The MitoPRO Series incorporates four different wavelengths. These wavelengths are considered to be the most bio-active for lasting health benefits:

  • 630 nm (Red Light)
  • 660 nm (Red Light)
  • 830 nm (Near Infrared Light)
  • 850 nm (Near Infrared Light)

Why does this matter?

Because, like the cells in plants, our body’s cells absorb different spectrums of light differently. The more “bio-active” a light wavelength is, the more readily our cells can absorb it.

As a result, the wavelengths produced by MitoPRO devices can maximize cytochrome c oxidase (CcO) activation. This activation has been shown to aid in hair & scalp health, muscle recovery, skin health, oral health, and bone & joint health.

Woman sitting in front of a MitoPRO 300
Plus, unlike the BIOMAX devices, the MitoPRO panels output an equal amount of each wavelength. In other words, you’re getting 25% of each clinically-backed wavelength, rather than just 5% for some like with the BIOMAX Series.

Device Weight

The MitoPRO Series has a couple of other stand-out benefits compared to the BIOMAX Series. One of those is the lighter weight of the MitoPRO devices.

While the BIOMAX Series weighs between 11 and 33 lbs, the MitoPRO Series comes in much lighter at 7 to 30 lbs. While minimal, this weight reduction makes it easier to move around, set up, or take down MitoPRO panels when necessary.

As a result, the MitoPRO Series may be best for people who may not want to get an accompanying stand or know they’ll often need to move their panels around.

Lens Beam Angle

When it comes to lens beam angle, there’s going to be a trade-off between treatment coverage and treatment intensity: the wider the lens beam angle, the greater the treatment coverage but the more power is “wasted” the further you stand away from your red light therapy panel.

MitoPRO devices use a 60-degree lens beam angle, while BIOMAX devices use a 90-degree lens beam angle. This means that, while MitoPRO devices may cover less surface area, they’ll have a higher concentrated intensity even at further distances, so you can get the most out of your red light therapy sessions.

Return Policy

Both the BIOMAX and MitoPRO Series offer 60-day satisfaction guarantees.

However, only MitoPRO devices come with a 100% money-back guarantee because Mito Red Light doesn’t charge you an additional 20% for restocking fees as PlatinumLED does.

BIOMAX 900 vs. MitoPRO 1500

We often get asked to share our thoughts on the BIOMAX 900 and MitoPRO 1500, so we will briefly compare the two and see how they stack up against each other.

As the names indicate, the MitoPRO 1500 produces 1500 watts of power, while the BIOMAX 900 produces only 900 watts. With the MitoPRO 1500, you’re getting 66.7% more power output than the BIOMAX 900 (and at a better price!).

Plus, the MitoPRO 1500 includes all the same features as the BIOMAX 900:

  • A combination of red and near infrared light
  • Panel linkability for a customized setup
  • Irradiance > 150 mW/cm2
  • 300 LED lights
  • A built-in timer

It’s also six inches taller at 42″, so it’s even better for those looking for a full-body treatment. But, the MitoPRO 1500 is a tad skinnier at 10″ (vs. the BIOMAX 900 at 12″).

Combine all the above with the quality customer service Mito Red Light is known for providing, and the MitoPRO 1500 seems to give you much more bang for your buck.

Final Thoughts on PlatinumLED’s BIOMAX Series

Acne, fine lines, and wrinkles – at some point, everyone has to deal with them. From those embarrassing breakouts in middle school to the crow’s feet of encroaching middle age, our skin needs special care and attention to keep it looking healthy and youthful.

Red light therapy is one fantastic tool to add to your skincare regimen.

That said, PlatinumLED’s BIOMAX Series does provide powerful red light therapy with customizable panels and convenient linkability.

But, the high price and poor customer service attached to these products prevent us from fully recommending the BIOMAX Series.

PlatinumLED Therapy Lights garners a dismal F rating on the Better Business Bureau website
PlatinumLED 2.7 Star Rating on Trustpilot
PlatinumLED Therapy Lights also has a poor rating (2.7 stars) on Trustpilot

These issues may be enough to convince you to look elsewhere for your red light therapy device – especially since the MitoPRO Series offers the same (if not better) features at a more affordable price.

    • Hi Bill, if you’re looking to learn more about red light therapy, you can check out our beginner’s guide here. We’ve also written an article on the benefits of red light therapy. I’ve personally been using red light therapy for quite a few years now, primarily for its anti-aging and pain relief benefits. In particular, I’ve found myself with healthier skin, and my back pain is significantly better. There are many red light therapy vendors out there, so we always recommend doing your research into any company before investing in one of their devices.

  2. Loved your review Anne! So timely, as I am in the market for a red light / NIR device. MitroPRO sounds a great prospect. I am in Australia, which complicates things a bit (e.g. delivery, warranty claims).

    • Hey Kevin, glad you liked it! I do know that Mito does ship to Australia but am not sure if there are different policies around delivery and warranty claims for Australia. It might be worth reaching out to their customer service team for more information if the MitoPRO is something you’re interested in!

  3. Thanks for thorough review. Just wanted to leave a warning about PlatinumLED: first they delay your shipment and you can find out about it only AFTER placing the order by visiting their blog (!) Secondly, I kindly asked them not to include invoice into the shipment, but instead they ended up cancelling my order, and doing incomplete refund (!!). I ended up with NO panel and $50 short after their refund. WTF was that? Avoid PlatinumLED and go with any other manufacturer!

    • Hi Ed, you’re correct that PlatinumLED Therapy Lights and PlatinumLED Grow Lights are the same company – they’re just targeting different markets. That said, you should be able to contact the folks behind PlatinumLED Therapy Lights by calling 844-533-4769 (9am – 5pm PST, M-F) or emailing support@platinumtherapylights.com.

  5. Concerning the Biomax lights and the percentages of produced wavelengths, what percentage of a wavelength is needed to be truly effective?

Is producing 5% of a wavelength very effective for producing results or is it really just a gimmick?

    • Hi GW, it’s tough to say. Their decision to use different percentages of wavelengths is based on something called the biphasic dose response, which is scientifically validated. In essence, extremely low doses may have no cellular response, moderate doses may stimulate and be beneficial, and high doses may inhibit cell function. That said, whether 5% of a wavelength falls into the bucket of “low dose” or “moderate dose”, there’s no clinical evidence, to my knowledge, to know for sure.
